Hubert Lawrence | Merlene was really fast

first_imgLast week’s coverage of the Lausanne Diamond League meet contained a reminder of how good Merlene Ottey really was. It came as Dafne Schippers, Holland’s reigning world champion at 200 metres, edged persistent Marie-Josee Talou of Cote d’Ivoire to win in 22.10 seconds. Moments after they crossed the line, the commentator dropped the hint. Schippers had missed the meet record set by Ottey 22 years ago. That’s amazing, the sprint queen won the 200m in Lausanne in 1995 in 22.07. Even she can’t have imagined that it would have survived the onslaught of great sprinters like Veronica Campbell-Brown and Allyson Felix. More over, 22.07 doesn’t even sound fast. By contrast, the fastest two men’s 200m times there are 19.58 and 19.59 by the incomparable Usain Bolt. The tall man, however, isn’t alone in speeding in Lausanne. Americans Xavier Carter, Tyson Gay, Wallace Spearmon, Walter Dix and Carl Lewis, Bolt’s Jamaican compatriots, Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade, and the Central American trio of Churandy Martina, Alonzo Edward and Ato Boldon have all broken 20 seconds there. Given that, it’s remarkable that no woman has stepped under the 22 seconds threshold in the same place. For me, that makes Ottey’s meet record all the more noteworthy. There are, perhaps, mitigating circumstances. The Lausanne meet organisers don’t have a 200m race for women every year. The 100m is probably contested more often, but 22 years is a long time. The real truth is clear. Merlene Ottey was really, really fast. To this day, she holds the world record for the 200m indoors, 21.87, and was the first under seven seconds for the indoor 60m. With Elaine Thompson staying out of the 200m, Ottey’s outdoor Jamaican record of 21.64 seconds could last much longer. She set it 26 years ago. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson are the only Jamaicans with 100m times better than Merlene’s best of 10.74, set 21 years ago in Rome. If the East Germans are ever sanctioned for well-documented use of illegal performance enhancers in the 1970s and 1980s, and with 1983 World 100m bronze medal winner and confessed drug cheat Diane Williams off the books, Ottey’s collection of individual World Championship gold medals would grow from two to five. Then she would get her due. For the time being, her name will pop up every now and again as it did last week, and we’ll think, ‘Wow, Merlene did really faas!’ n Hubert Lawrence has made notes at track side since 1980.last_img read more

Summer signing set to miss Man United’s UCL clash with CSKA Moscow

first_imgManchester United look set to be without Morgan Schneiderlin for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes of United’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace at the weekend but missed training on Monday morning with an unspecified injury.Schneiderlin has made 13 appearances for the club since signing in a £24million deal from Southampton in the summer and his absence would represent a blow to Louis van Gaal’s plans.Antonio Valencia, Paddy McNair and James Wilson were also absent from training as they continue their recoveries from injury.Phil Jones and Memphis Depay, who missed the Selhurst Park stalemate, were out on the field at Carrington, but were kept away from the main squad.A win over CSKA at Old Trafford on Tuesday will keep United on course for qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League. But United go into the match on the back of three successive games without a goal – with their last strike coming against the Russian side when the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in Moscow a fortnight ago. 1 Morgan Schneiderlin last_img read more

Assembly Speaker Fabian rattles his tin can

first_imgCALIFORNIA Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez has been in the news a lot lately, mostly about his penchant for a lavish lifestyle on his contributors’ dime. It turns out he wants a long political career, too – also on his contributors’ dime. The Sacramento Bee reported earlier this month that in a private caucus, Nuñez hit up all 47 Assembly Democrats for $50,000 apiece to help pass his anti-term-limits initiative that would allow the politicians to stay in office longer. But that’s only fitting. Seeing that Proposition 93 would only benefit politicians, it makes sense that politicians – through their campaign funds – would help pay the bill. So far, special interests have poured $3million into the campaign, about 20 times what the opposition has raised. Just 2 out of 607 new IDA-supported companies in Donegal

first_imgOnly 2 of the 607 IDA supported companies that have located in Ireland have come to Donegal since 2008.Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn revealed the figures. He described them as a “damning indictment of the job creation policies of this government and those before it”. Senator Mac Lochlainn has also revealed that while there has been a 50% increase in jobs at IDA supported companies across the State since 2002, the number of jobs in Donegal in IDA supported companies has “stood still”.He said “I have obtained these figures from the Minister for Jobs and Enterprise, Frances Fitzgerald in response to a parliamentary question and from an examination of the IDA’s annual reports since 2002.“They are frankly, a damning indictment of job creation policies over those years under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael led governments. Only 2 out of the 607 new IDA supported companies that have set up in Ireland since 2008 have come to Donegal. That’s in a period where various governments promised us “balanced regional development”.“I have also established that since 2002, the number of jobs in IDA supported companies across the State has increased by 50% from 133,000 to 200,000 jobs in 2016. However, here in Donegal, we have pretty much stood still, moving from 2,873 IDA supported jobs in 2002 to 3,039 jobs last year. Indeed, if it wasn’t for the tremendous success of Pramerica, led by local leaders, those numbers would have halved”. “The Government and the IDA should have been able to build on the success story of Pramerica and other companies that have located in Donegal. They should also have built on the vision and leadership of the team at LYIT who have delivered the CoLab for start up businesses and the Science and Technology Park.“The excuses have to stop and the delivery to Donegal of our fair share of jobs and investment needs to start. The Government need to outline their plan to make this happen”.Just 2 out of 607 new IDA-supported companies in Donegal was last modified: August 1st, 2017 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalIDAjobslast_img read more

Tottenham complete signing of Southampton goalkeeper

first_img Paulo Gazzaniga has swapped Southampton for Tottenham 1 Tottenham have signed goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton. The 25-year-old has joined for an undisclosed fee and has penned a five-year contract with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.Gazzaniga made 23 appearances in his five-year spell with the Saints, having joined from Gillingham in 2012. The Argentine, who spent last season on loan at Rayo Vallecano, will provide extra competition for Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm at Tottenham. He told the north London club’s official website: “I feel amazing and am so happy to start training with the boys.“This is an amazing club and the facilities are unbelievable.”Gazzaniga follows Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez, who has joined for a reported club-record £42million fee, into the squad as Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino looks to rebuild following the summer sale of England full-back Kyle Walker to Manchester City. The goalkeeper is looking forward to linking up again with his countryman Pochettino, who had a successful spell in charge at Southampton before taking over at Spurs in May 2014, and coach Toni Jimenez.“They like to always push you to be your best and compete at the maximum level,” Gazzaniga said.“I like that kind of work because I want to keep improving.”“If you look at the last four or five years, Tottenham is going up, so I think it is the right club to keep improving myself.”Gazzaniga, though, knows he will face a battle to force his way into the first team squad ahead of captain Lloris and Dutchman Vorm.“I can learn a lot from them, because they are world-class goalies,” he said.“I think Hugo will be a good teacher for me, I like to watch them and try to improve myself and think I am in the right place to do that.”Premier League transfer news: All done deals so far in 2017 summer windowlast_img read more

MONDAY: STAY OFF THE ROADS – DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL STATEMENT IN FULL

first_imgBELOW IS AN URGENT STATEMENT FROM DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL: Donegal County Council are managing their limited salt supplies by using a 50:50 mixture of salt and grit to treat priority routes. The weather conditions have changed in the past 48hours from heavy show, to freezing conditions with showers of rain and sleet. This change resulted in widespread black ice and treacherous road conditions on Saturday and Sunday mornings . These conditions, which are expected to persist into the middle of next week, are forecast to be compunded by local heavy falls of snow across the county early on Monday. An Garda Siochana have asked the public to avoid travelling during these conditions. Donegal County Council are appealing to the widespread public to heed this advice, and to refrain from travelling if at all possible over the coming days. They have further advised that where travel cannot be avoided, a much reduced speed should be used and increased care taken, as motorists can expect black ice and treacherous conditions, even where roads have been treated. The National Roads Authority (NRA) have advised that national salt supplies are adequate but must be carefully managed to ensure priority routes  are dealt with, however long the cold weather continues  – the cold spell is predicted to last until the end of the coming week.  The NRA  are distributing salt on a carefully managed basis.MONDAY: STAY OFF THE ROADS – DONEGAL COUNTY COUNCIL STATEMENT IN FULL was last modified: December 6th, 2010 by gregShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Poll: Has Google Lost The Plot By Attacking Microsoft’s Bid For Yahoo?

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#Polls#web While I was flying halfway across the world, a huge story developed that I am just now catching up on: Microsoft launched a takeover bid for Yahoo valued at $44.6 Billion. In a frankly stunning move today, the Official Google Blog has published a post raising questions about “Microsoft’s hostile bid for Yahoo!.” David Drummond, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer for Google, wonders whether Microsoft could “now attempt to exert the same sort of inappropriate and illegal influence over the Internet that it did with the PC?”Further, Drummond queries whether Microsoft-Yahoo could “extend unfair practices from browsers and operating systems to the Internet?”. Specifically he referred to email, IM, and web-based services. He also says that the bid threatens “the underlying principles of the Internet: openness and innovation.” It’s an incredible piece of PR and, some might suggest, fear-mongering. But let’s throw these questions open. Let us know in the following poll what you think about Google’s response to Microhoo!.UPDATE: Microsoft has responded to the Google blog post. In a statement from Brad Smith, General Counsel, Microsoft states that “the combination of Microsoft and Yahoo! will create a more competitive marketplace by establishing a compelling number two competitor for Internet search and online advertising”; areas where of course Google is number one.
